Description

The story of Jericho is virtually a summary of the whole archaeological history of the Holy Land. A neolithic tower dates back about 8,000 B.C., and its history continues from that point.

An oasis in the Judean wilderness, Jerisho is noted for its beauty. In Deuteronomy and 2 Chronicles it is called “the city of the palm trees.” Mark Anthony once gave the city to CLeopatra as a gift. But for many, Jericho is best remembered in connection with Joshua.

…AND IT CAME ABOUT, WHEN THE PEOPLE HEAR THE SOUND OF THE TRUMPET, THAT THE PEOPLE SHOUTED WITH A GREAT SHOUT AND THE WALL FELL DOWN FLAT… Joshua 6:20

In the New Testament times the traditional site of Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan River by John the Baptist is near Jericho, and in the background is the Mt. of Temptation which many believe to be the site of Jesus’ temptations following his baptism. The immortal story of the good Samaritan is set on the narrow road connecting Jericho and Jerusalem. And Jericho is the place Zacchaeus climbed the sycamore tree to see Jesus and had his life changed for all eternity. (Luke 19:1-10)
